Support Groups and Free Services Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse Support Group: Wilson Community Church is starting this support group for abuse survivors at the end of April. Separate groups for men and women. Group size is limited. Cost for book, workbook and materials is $25. Meeting date, time and location to be announced. 237-6608. Al-Anon: To provide support for families and friends of alcoholics, this group meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. at West Nash Methodist Church, 2106 W. Nash St. Alcoholics Anonymous: Monday through Friday, closed meetings are at noon at First Christian Church, 207 N. Tarboro. Use front entrance on Tarboro. Closed meeting means the gathering is only for those with a desire to stop drinking. Open meetings are for anyone -- drinkers, family members, friends or those just wanting information. Down East ALS Support Group: ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a neurodegenerative disease often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease. This group provides an opportunity for patients and caregivers to share ideas and ask questions to help in dealing with the daily challenges of ALS. In addition to bi-monthly meetings, the group operates a lending closet of assistive devices for ALS patients, such as wheelchairs, walkers, and shower benches. Family Caregiver Support Group: Meets the second Thursday of each month from 11 a.m. until noon at First Baptist Church at the corner of Nash Street and Park Avenue. Inmate Prison Ministry: This group is for people who have been in a physical or mental prison or jail. The group offers support to people and families. The ministry is run by former inmates. Kinship Care Community Group: Sponsored by the Wilson County Department of Social Services, this group provides a place for relatives raising children to fellowship with other relative caretakers, create a support network and learn about needed services in the community. La Leche League of Wilson: Provides on-going breastfeeding support and education through telephone help and monthly meetings. The group is an opportunity for moms to attend state-wide and national conferences with sessions on numerous child-rearing topics. The organization provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. The Crisis Center also provides Daily Reassurance Calls to senior citizens, disabled adults and latchkey children. Wilson Pregnancy Center: A Christian ministry whose mission is to assist individuals facing the challenges of crisis pregnancy, to meet emotional and spiritual needs resulting from an abortion or miscarriage, and to promote sexual abstinence until marriage. Provides the following confidential, free services regardless of race, creed, or marital status: A compassionate and confidential setting in which peer counselors offer pregnancy tests, accurate information on prenatal development, abortion procedures and risks; and counseling about pregnancy options; "HOPE" program providing education for parents in infant and child care, parenting, and spiritual growth. Opportunities are available to earn maternity and baby items, equipment, and necessities for parenthood; Practical help to those suffering emotionally or spiritually from a previous abortion or miscarriage through counseling; abstinence-until-marriage counseling that provides accurate information on sexually transmitted diseases and contraception failure rates.
